Iman and Paulette Rees-Denis 2009
I am Scottish born, arrived in NZ 1997 with my husband and two sons.

My first teacher in 1999 was Liz Irvine of
"Art of Belly Dance" in East Auckland, who, opened my
eyes to the dance form and I was quickly enthralled. My first taste of belly dance was Egyptian
Cabaret with it's beautiful bejewelled costuming and movement, I enjoyed this form but it wasn't yet
complete for me.

A group of five dancers, formed a troupe
"Kashani "and we performed in a variety of settings and
festivals over the next 12/18 months, since 1999 I have been fortunate to study  with both New
Zealand and overseas  dancers .

I formed a Tribal duet
"Iman"  in 2002 with my former dance partner Debbie Hand and we pushed
our limits to learn as much as possible about the Tribal movement which was relatively fresh in
New Zealand. We developed our own style of synchronized dance where we cued from each other
and used both choreography and improvisational dance to perform, following a combination of
both Gypsy Caravan and Fat chance Belly Dance models of teaching . We began teaching 2005, in
an adult Education setting in East Auckland.

I decided to keep the name
"Iman" ( meaning faith or belief ) as appropriate for our style and the
history of our dance.

  • 2007 I formed the fusion duet  "Sisters of the Tribe".

  • 2008 I founded the  "Spirit Inc Dance"  school and the "Tribal Spirit"  troupe.

I am Collective Soul One qualified (CS1) and have completed Teacher Training Level One (TT1) in
Gypsy Caravan with Paulette Rees-Denis.
